Post-tooth extraction care instructions

After your tooth removal, it’s crucial for a blood clot to form to stop bleeding and promote healing. Bite firmly on a gauze pad for 60 minutes right after your appointment. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and bite down again for another hour. You may need to repeat this process multiple times.

Once the blood clot forms, avoid disturbing it. Don’t rinse vigorously, use straws, smoke, or drink alcohol for 72 hours, as these actions can dislodge the clot and delay healing. Also, limit vigorous exercise for a week since it can raise blood pressure and cause more bleeding.

You might experience pain and swelling after the extraction. To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack to the area. Take prescribed pain medication as directed and let us know if it isn’t effective. If antibiotics are provided, continue taking them for the full course, even if symptoms improve. Drink plenty of fluids and stick to nutritious, soft foods for about a week.

Resume your regular dental routine, including brushing and flossing, after 24 hours to aid healing and maintain oral hygiene.

You should feel better within 4-7 days and can gradually return to your normal activities. If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, persistent swelling with fever, or any adverse reactions to medication, please contact Precision Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Precision Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Phone Number (623) 518-2325.
